Removing textured paint

Post by TB on Tue Apr 05, 2011 5:42 pm

I would really like to repaint my house, but the existing paint is textured. Is there an easy way to remove the textured paint? I have sanded the small bathroom and decided that it is way too difficult for me to tackle extra large bedroom. I was told not to use paint stripper because it could ruin the drywall. I cannot handle large sanders and the sander that I used for the bathroom worked okay but I needed to change the sandpaper every 5 minutes (I also nicked the drywall in several places). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Textured paint

I am not sure what type of paint you have that has a texture built into it. Usually the texture is applied to the wall then the wall is painted.
In some homes I have seen home owners adding a "sand like" additive to the paint. Hopefully that is not what you have, because that is horrible.
Removing paint from a wall is not worth the effort. You will need to find a material, or a design that will help you work with what you got or skim coat over it all with joint compound, or both.
